I think stern once got upset with them years ago because they were holding back on playing certain calls on the air like they were planning on releasing a prank call CD (similar to Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson had with their terrorizing telemarketers CDs)
I’m pretty sure it was that they admitted to brainstorming ideas for calls to keep on the back burner in case Stern retires. Howard went ballistic because, “I’M PAYING YOU TO WORK NOOOWWW!”

Even Richard Christy admitted while he was in a band and touring he played in bands that weren’t selling a ton of tickets / playing large venues. Even playing a festival while is something impressive remember a lot of these festivals have a good amount of bands near the bottom that are probably breaking even / losing money doing festivals on the tour costs.
There are bands whose entire reputation is "festival fodder". Maybe like 3k Germans and Swedish people like them but they are on every festival and always have a degree of press and they are nothing interesting. They exist to give the fans in attendance time to go buy merch, food, beer and use the bathroom.

I haven't listened to Stern in 10-15 years but I remember Sal complaining about how broke he was and how his wife wanted to leave him over it and he was making triple the money as a stockbroker etc.

Really makes you wonder how badly Howie was ripping these guys off. Hoo hoo.
All of the places Sal worked for were raided by the SEC/FBI and he was blackballed by the financial industry. They did a whole bit on the Stern show where they busted his balls about the raids & who he gave up to avoid prison time. They read his resume off on the air & the prison sentence for each head of the company received: that was a good bit.

He was unemployed for like 5-6 years before getting hired by the Stern show after failing to kickstart his comedy & music career in the interim: that's why he was so fucking broke in those early Sirius years: he was living off of whatever he made in the mid/late 90s & a mountain of credit card debt.

Weird sidenote: One of Sal's co-workers at these boiler room places he worked at was TV producer Jeff Beacher.

This is why it's annoying when people act like all the stern flunkies are losers who never would have gone anywhere anyways. Howard ACTIVELY SABOTAGED THEM with Jewish bullshit like this to ensure they never had a chance of finding another gig lucrative enough to leave. Fuck you, wiggy. You don't own there every creative output.

No one is thinking that he was a millionaire. But the reason he didn't purchase a house and was living in a storage facility was that he was told by WXRK that they would hire him after the Win John's Job Contest. Meaning that his employment was guaranteed that he didn't just move to NYC not knowing if he might get a job working in radio. He made the big move with job security. He had enough money to move to NYC and work for the peanuts that Stern pays everyone.

In that contest literally every fan site had Sal dominating the votes. And practically every staff member picked Sal to win. Richard won the online vote and the reaction in the room was disbelief from everyone including Sal outright saying it was fixed. Later Sal would be hired anyways. And proving that the votes really didn't matter, Shuli who got a whopping 1% of the votes, was hired on the show full time despite being hated by anyone with a pulse and having absolutely zero discernible talent.
You're not entirely right here.

Before the contest was decided, Christy announced he was leaving his band for a new opportunity. Sal apparently saw this and threatened to sue the station because rigging radio contests is illegal.
