This is both a last ditch effort to pick up some followers or a smokescreen to try and make it less obvious that he bought some followers.

The US forces took Omaha and Utah beaches and the Brits and Canadians took Gold, Sword and Juno beaches. The Spielberg propaganda made it look like America did it alone but they didn't.

And Dunkirk was a military failure. An unprepared and naive expeditionary force who went up against a vastly superior and more motivated enemy. A failure that had a better conclusion than it potentially could have, thanks to pluck and ingenuity, but a failure nonetheless.

Every time I see that scene it angers me.

The Kraut would have shot him. Why wouldn't he? He was in the heat of battle and he just pushed a blade into Heebie Kikeberger's throat. In that scenario, you're killing anyone who's on the other team because... why not? Those are the rules. You want to take a chance he'll shoot you in the back when you walk past him?

I get why Schpielberg did it. For the dramatic payoff later etc. But do you want to make a realistic war movie or not? Because a realistic war movie would have Upham either shooting the German in the back while he was fighting with Goldberg or the Kraut shooting him in the face while he was crying on the stairs. No wonder (((they))) don't know how to fight.
