I was in middle school when he came out. So I'm his OG demographic.
He could always rap. But when you were a young and angry pre-teen, his schtick made more sense than it does now.
He rapped about being poor, mentally ill, and angry. That works for any 13 year old.
I'm not saying the guy is a zoomer rapper. I'm saying his content never veered into social commentary or artistic importance. It was all about being poor, crazy, doing drugs, and wanting to violate the people he didn't like. Now that he's, what, 40-50?... what is it worth?
He's just a moment in time without a real movement to pin his badge to.
It's weird to see the guy getting dragged now for his cringy singles when it's obvious he can still rap better than anyone.
It is true his demo all grew up and his content is useless to us now - so is that the problem? Is he focusing on the wrong shit? Does he need to get with the times? I dunno. His 'clap-back' tracks to everyone from Cannibis to MGK were neat but he keeps having to defend his legacy like he's insecure. Like, dude you're maybe the best rapper to ever live, why are you even entertaining these retards with responses?
I think it's because Em knows he has no legacy beyond being a good rapper because the content of his art was worthless and his beefs were all petty and meaningless. He's rich beyond fuck, so he doesn't need the money. He's only still putting out music to fight the trolls on social media. He's Emtrick I. Nenlinson. And it's sad. It's like Ted Williams coming out of cryo-storage to challenge Ohtani to a HR Derby because he feels he's being disrespected.
I for one think Em could put out a sick album based on fan feedback - like, take the 10-15 funniest fan ideas and free style about them and make a record. He could be the "Whose Line Is It Anyway" of rapping. That would sell. And be gay. But sell.
