See this is a tough one. If you’re talking strictly terrestrial and then only including Satellite occasionally the best guest is Ian Halperin or Dice. They had crossovers to both eras and were great in both. They weren’t just guests but characters in their own right who stole the show anytime they were on.

But those are also unique types of guest. Nowhere in the same vein as Lewis Black or Rich Vos who were just comedian guests on the show. (Dice is a comedian too but he’s a whole other beast.)

Its very skewed to the satellite era but i think it counts because he WAS on the terrestrial era but Patrice is probably the best comedian guest they’ve had in there. If you want to say Bobby or Vos could you honestly say they were funnier on the show than Patrice? He was one of those guys where he didn’t have to spit out a line to be funny, he just was funny. This made him a perfect fit for O&A: It never felt like he was trying to get his jokes out or compete on a comedy level while he could also hang, bullshit, and still make it all entertaining.

Ian Halperin was never on WNEW, only Satellite... Dice's appearances became more rare on Satellite. At WNEW, Dice was getting stoned and calling O&A at least once a week.

Vos created the whole roast attack comedy thing that Colin, Norton, etc. carried into the Satellite era. It was definitely present on WNEW thanks mostly to Vos, who taught O&A how to be comfortable pointing out when other people bomb. And Lewis Black MIGHT be O&A's longest running guest other than Dice. O&A was the perfect home for Lewis' scream rant thing.

Even listening to shows where Patrice is in (where it’s not just clipped out) you can’t really see where it’s going, or he’s just not on his game or has the energy. Other times he had too much energy. But if we’re talking strictly clipped highlights I’ve listened to more Patrice than anyone else on the show. A lot of the clipped highlights for Bobby or Vos is them getting shit on. However as we saw in the “Spinning wheel of death” show they were fawwwkin on their game when it came to just spitting out funny lines and making the live listening of the show great.

We often forget that the whole concept of doing a live radio show was "invite the right people, bring up the right topic, throw shit at the wall. and hope for the best." Sometimes everyone is on their game, and you get a highlight reel.

Those old shows were ONLY available to the hardcores... There was no "rewind" button. You couldn't hear the show again UNLESS you were a hardcore, stockpiling 54kbps .mp3 files of every episode.

O&A also easily did 20 hours of radio per week. Most podcasts are capped at 1 hour weekly, unless they bother doing more than 1 episode per week. There is a lot less work for podcasts to do, and even in using "the shotgun approach," O&A hit the mark a lot more often than not. This leaves easily 50% of their weekly output as listenable, which is still 10 hours of radio gold vs. 1 hour of podcasting.

People who listen to podcasts appear to have higher standards simply because now, the act of listening is low effort. People take for granted that every episode is instantly available. The shows aren't better now, the podcasters just release their best work they've toiled over. Their shitty recordings get put in a folder and never uploaded. Then you have the factor where Joe Rogan and others do every episode live, but the show is so low energy and boring that only the hardcores bother listening anyway. It's circles back around to the beginning.

Availability has made it so some of the hidden gems from the 90's can be rediscovered. "How did this not get more play back then?" It either got lost in the shuffle, or maybe it only became funny with the added context of time.

Napster changed everything. People generally recorded every WNEW show and there were pirate internet streams. Same with XM and Sirius shows. But Napster made it possible for random people to get access to O&A and Stern bits and shows that they never would have found. Stupid stuff like the "100 Grand!!" prank call was shared pretty much nonstop. A lot of radio shows would download O&A bits from Napster or Kazaa and then recreate and rip them off for their own shows. File sharing was like some type of 'Prepburger' service for hack radio shows to take O&A bits.

It was also what caused older comics like Hicks or Kinison to have a resurgence despite being dead. As people started putting their old recordings and tapes and bootlegs of those comics online for everyone to hear. The friends of Hicks put all of his stuff out there for people to download for free and it made him popular again even though he was long dead and there was zero promotion.

O&A also easily did 20 hours of radio per week.

20 hours. Live. Pretty much all unscripted. And with callers and guests being allowed to interact in a live environment. No other show or podcast comes close except for 80s and 90s Stern (and maybe some Artie year).
