Two “incomes” and no child support, car paid off since it’s almost 20 years old so really the only expense they have to worry about are monthly bills, food, and mortgage yet they both look like shit / dress like slobs / live in the ghetto and can’t afford to do any upgrades on their place that would help the resale value.

And he might not be functionally poor, but he lives a poverty life. He's not on food stamps or welfare but he's childless and in his mid-40s with zero savings or retirement investments or 401k. Him and Niki should have at least half of their house paid off and like $250k-500k in investments (counting retirement). Instead, nothing, and only a marginal amount of their house paid off.
