His smile is so weird because of the tightness at the corners of his mouth. That comes from insecurity: he wants to be smug and superior but his inescapable, deeply-seated insecurity that he will be mocked prevents him from displaying the true smile of a confident, uninhibited man. So he ends up with this weirdly tight rictus.

The psychology behind that smile is why he is so insufferable. Sad part is he'll never have the balls to just accept that he is flawed, and proceed to work on himself. He's stuck.
