And it was considered ridiculous in the 90s. Kevin Smith famously picketed his own movie to underscore how ridiculous it was. He even later pointed out the the westboro baptist church (who represents nobody) regularly released statements on things to draw controversy and get attention and most times few if any members showed up to actually demonstrate.

I was gonna mention that with Kevin Smith - it was for Dogma and had a crowd of like 11 people - one being Kevin Smith. I remember Manson getting religious groups upset but they couldn’t even get his shows cancelled or songs / videos pulled from TV and only made him more popular with young people. Nice job, stupid.

There is a podcast series called The Witch Trials of JK Rowling conducted by a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church. I think the host is a daughter of the main guy or one of the main guys. It talks about when JK released the first book and she got a lot of pushback by the Christian right wingers due to witchcraft fears, and then nowadays with the pushback against her work due to her being labelled a “TERF”. It’s a decent listen.
