I'm not at all saying it isn't a big fat unfalsifiable lie, but I kinda like the idea of pat's whole family being made up of intellectuals and working class heroes while he's the retarded black sheep of the family trying to pass off their accomplishments as his own. Not only that, but despite allegedly being a writer he fails to even make their exceptional stories sound interesting or believable and pass on any wisdom or perspective their experiences could have given him. It's almost more pathetic than just completely making it up.
His grandparents were just some small town hayseeds. Its hilarious how ashamed he is of his parents and grandparents past that he has to inflate their resumes to make it seem that he somehow has the authority on the topic because of these details. He really is stuck in a 13 year old mentality.
