O&A v. Stern

I’m not talking about their fame here. I’m talking about their shows. I’ve been thinking a lot about O&A and what makes them so good, especially in comparison to the only real competitor they had- Stern. Here’s a bunch of useless rambling:

1.) Guests. O&A, at first, weren’t interested in getting A listers in for interviews wether it was revealing ones or just to mock them. Eventually, maybe after the merger, they became more interested in these serious interviews with big celebrities, but being in the same building as Stern (plus the blocking of guests) made it so O&A would get the shitlisters. My point is this: The lower access to guests made it so O&A had no choice but to have the revolving table of Bobby, Colin, Vos, Patrice, etc. While others may see that as a handicap for the show its what made it so great. Where else were you gonna hear those guys being funny? O&A elevated the comics and the comics elevated the show. Period. Sniff.

2.) The “Weirdness”. I’ve talked before about how O&A imitated Stern, even if they weren’t consciously aware of it. However, anything they did that emulated Stern was even weirder than whatever he would have done. Cocktober became the Gay Off, except the Gay Off was about getting desperate straight dudes to do gay things for money, not oogling at cocks. Stern would have butt bongos and strippers ride the sybian to produce softcore porn. O&A were getting strippers in to shoot darts of their pussy and see how far a whifflebat would go, not to be sexy but to humiliate and create a freakshow. The biggest aspect of this was the wackpackers. The Stern retards were tame in comparison to what O&A got. The same way Stern got the prime comedians he got the relatively competent retards. The illusion of the whackpack is that they were chosen for “not realizing why they were funny.” With O&A’s whackpack there was no illusion: They were freakshow retards. Lady Di, Bobo, and Big A were more fucked up mentally and in their personal lives than someone like Iron Sheik, Riley Martin, Hank the Dwarf, etc.

3.) Lack of show preparation. The Stern Show, even in it’s prime, always felt like a production. You were very conscious you were watching/listening to a show which, while the content might not be “professional,” it is certainly produced professionally. Say what you want about Bababooey being a retard, he can produce a radio show. O&A never had this. Not only would little to no preparation go into the show, which created more of a laid back impromptu show atmosphere, they never had competent producers or anything that made the show feel professional. Rick Delgado, Ben Sparks, Steve C, and Sam were all incompetent retards who didn’t know fuck all about making a show a show and were more notable for being insane on / off air personalities.

4.) Taking shit on the chin. The other thing I notice about Stern shows is that it’s hosts essentially create an environment for everyone around them to be mocked, and the most the mocking would stretch to is Robin, Artie, Fred, Jackie…but of course, never Howard. O&A were thin skinned faggots, yes. But they at least gave the face that they were ok with being made fun of. All of them were self deprecating and there is hours upon hours of the hosts getting shit on by comics and vise versa. Once again, it felt like a haaaang rather than a show, maaaaan.

5.) I lost my energy typing this.

I am a Howard listener first and foremost. Only looked for another show after the AGT/Artie exit. O&A sounds like a second rate show. No real cohesion or flow, just winging it. Not because they were great improvisers, but because a lack of effort or willingness. The first hour was news and current events and the rest having a comedian on trying to fill hours. 2 guys in their 50s trying to be antiestablishment just came off as tryhards and edgelordy. Even their wackpackers and freaks were second rate. Bobo and stlaker Patti?

The defunct subreddit and Owen have brought me more laughs than the show itself. In fact, Ron & Fez was a better show.

Anthony tried sounding like Stern in all their early shows. Whether that was a conscious thing or not I have no idea. Not really going out on a limb here but early Anthony was so much better than what he became on XM/Sirius.

Thats what i’m getting at though. The fact that they obviously didn’t give a fuck about the production value of the show and just did whatever not only made it what it was, but produced some of the best content on the show. The Lady Di internship was off the cuff and suggested by Colin. Tequila and Donuts day just happened because Erock suggested it. Other great bits that just happened were anytime Patrice would ramble about movies, the Yakov Smirnoff dinner adventure, the Joe Piscopo bashing, etc. None of that shit would ever happen on the Stern Show, and if it would it would have been planned out like a week in advance. Not O&A. It just naturally came up, produced an hour of content and was fucking great.

“2 guys in their 50s trying to be antiestablishment just came off as tryhards and edgelordy.”
This I certainly don’t get because it describes Howard to a T. At least O&A were actually anti-establishment. They didn’t give a fuck about being celebrities, making their show some A lister media hub, didn’t give a fuck about their company, programmers, anything. Howard claimed to be for all of this but was a complete jew behind the scenes. Every company he worked for that he would rail against he would also suck the dick of. He hangs out with Ellen and Rosie despite making fun of them for years. You basically have to ask yourself whats more pathetic, 50 year olds being anti-establishment and being complete losers, or 50 year olds being anti-establishment while being a part of it.
The defunct subreddit and Owen have brought me more laughs than the show itself. In fact, Ron & Fez was a better show.
This I will not disagree with. Because i’m autistically obsessed with O&A, I always think about how you could introduce someone to it and the fact is you can’t. For me getting into O&A was by chance and a right time right moment thing. There are multiple bits you could show somebody from R&Z or Howard and possibly get them into the show because both were more interesting and wild.

I’ve brought this up before and no one seemed to agree with me. You listen to old clips and he has the exact same inflection as Howard.

I mean, I can’t really blame him. He was an admitted Stern fan and it was his first job in radio, so consciously or not he was going to emulate the guy he listened to and thought was a prime example of how to do radio.

The pre-"Private Parts" HSS was like a secret society, a hilarious inside gag the regular listeners were in on. Of all the various other shock-jock hacks, O&A were best at capturing a similar vibe. Their attempts at turning their staff into characters and emulating Stern's "raunchy" bits, though, didn't always work quite as well. It always came across as so try-hard. O&A were at their best when they were riffing amongst themselves, or with a good guest.

I think I know what you’re saying about liking O&A’s “don’t give a fuck” attitude that you like so much. However not giving a fuck is why the languished in “mediocrity” and were treated like shit by management and relegated to a tiny studio. Yes Howard was a try hard too, but he knew how to play the game. He is what he is because he thought so highly of himself and treated his show like the Tonight Show, and his show became the go to destination on radio.

Humor is subjective, and if you prefer O&A, that’s fine. But coming from Howard, the likes of “Intern Rob dresses up like a pig to mock Erock” or have Sam and Danny be cruel to retarded interns was meh. Yes Howard tortured retards, but it was funny to me. And Jimmy’s incessant piss and tranny talk and Anthony hahahholeeshitting at it was fucking stupid and unfunny.

The Vos and Colin appearances are great.

1.) Guests. O&A, at first, weren’t interested in getting A listers in for interviews wether it was revealing ones or just to mock them.
A-list guests have an agreement where you cannot ask them hard questions in exchange for access. O&A never once signed those agreements and would often never get the big guests. Especially when they had reputations of harassing and humiliating guests like the silent game, hanging up on people, ripping on them without respecting them. They brought in Ladi Di during a Game of Thrones interview because they cared more about the audience than scoring some stupid interview for a popular TV show. Hung on up Kristen Bell and other people because it was better for the show. Would constantly ask 'off limits' questions like Opie practically accusing Jimmy Snuka of murder (which became an international story). Anthony blurting about "what's this Kevin Costner thing" to Ripken. The audience mattered more for O&A. Stuff like JBL bringing in his fag energy drink would not be done on Stern.

Literally all scientologist actors and actresses will not do any talk shows unless the hosts agree to not bring up their cult. Stern will debase himself to score big celebrities. And ask the boring and safe questions.
The biggest aspect of this was the wackpackers. The Stern retards were tame in comparison to what O&A got.
Stern made them more tame but his wackpack was just as insane as O&A's version. And Stern's staff had maniacs like KC, Cabbie, and even Artie. But Stern would downplay this stuff and ban it from replays. Like one of Stern's wackpackers Awesome Angelo aka Double A was arrested for all sorts of child sex and child endangerment charges and he literally vanished from the show without a mention from that point on. If that was an O&A wackpacker they would have invited him on air like when they tried to find that guy who went on Dateline with Chris Hansen and said he loved listening to the show through "Opie and Anthony".

High Pitch Erik called in bomb threats. Howard used to let Daniel Carver rip on niggers, spics, and kikes nonstop. And even invited Daniel Carver to NYC for a roast which became a disaster when all of the nigger comedians bombed and Daniel emerged victoriously as some type of hero. Howard's wackpack just dwindled because his style of radio changed radically.
3.) Lack of show preparation. The Stern Show, even in it’s prime, always felt like a production.
O&A had its staples as well. Line of the day, what did we learn, scheduled interviews and contests, and things like Jocktober. Howard's only real scheduled event would be Robin's news. You never knew when Howard had sent Stuttering John out for interviews. Or when Win Fred's Money or some other contest was happening. Neither show was consistent except for one thing. Five days a week and 6AM. Stern's audience died once he stopped showing up.

Both shows had tons of preparation but they had to adjust on the fly. Because you never knew when something huge could happen in the news or someone's personal life or whatever. So everyday had like an hour block that could be anything.
Howard has to be the funniest person in the room and had certain topics that were off limits. No talking about his wife or kids. No talking about his money and paycheck. No talking about his failed governor run once it was over. No talking about Beth's career before she married Howard. No talking about Artie now. No mentioning Howard's old act like using 'nigger' or 'faggot' repeatedly.

Working with Stern is like working for Stalin where stuff is erased from history.

Won’t disagree with this. O&A railed against management not helping them when they wouldn’t even show up to ad meets and disregarded the bosses during show meetings. Doing sponsors, the bare minimum of your job, isn’t excuse enough for the company to invest in you like they wanted.

And I will say, while I praise O&A being off the cuff, it was often to their detriment. By 2012 the show was consumed with watching Youtube videos and recapping / watching TV shows. It is some of the worst most boring shit i’ve ever heard.
Humor is subjective, and if you prefer O&A, that’s fine. I feel sort of middle of the road (:image_9248:) on it. I think O&A, as hosts, were much funnier. But Howards show and the antics on it were funnier. A single Beetlejuice appearance beats out ALL Bobo appearances combined. Artie as a third mic was funnier than any third mic on O&A. But anything Howard said that was funny was written by Jackie. Anything funny that Anthony or Opie said was from their own mind.

The only good thing about Robin’s news was Gilbert interrupting it to make stupid jokes and drop racial slurs. “Gilbert, calm down.” Then 30 seconds later he’d do the same thing.

Robin’s News sometimes was the best part of the show. This is pre Gilbert and Artie doing the “Berry” bit, coincidentally Gilbert was in that day too:

If Kinison had lived he might have. But he had been dead by three years at that point. And Anthony only did the impression because Sam was such a huge part of the Stern show. You could probably listen to years of O&A and not hear a single mention of Kinison nor an impression of him. Same with Stern who also rarely brought him up.

As pathetic as OnA+J became, they could at least be genuine.
Howard realized his new sleazy style was a way to get recognized and he used it for his primary goal: starfucking and validation. I don't think he even cares about money as much as a fellow jewish pedophile patting his head and saying he matters. Ever since the 2000s his guests have always been far more "establishment," and Howard, more and more over time, became that safe space for Hollywood pedos where they could say "whoa, I'll be on the EDGY Stern show!" while knowing they were never in any real danger.
OnA had celebs and they were some of the worst content. At least sometimes they'd be brave enough to fuck with them, show them fucked up clips, or burn bridges entirely. The most frequent OnA guests were Jimmy's comic friends who were brought on because they were usually funny, not because of brand recognition... most of them got big AFTER OnA died.

Howard is the Gene Simmons of radio: great business mind and brand recognition... but a talentless christkiller zero.

Kinison was hilarious. He was the first comic to just attack everyone. He would ask guys if they fantasized about murdering their spouses and if they would take the kids down too. Or talk about how insanely dysfunctional his personal life was but in a truthful way and not some faggy 'made up' way. He would talk about sex addiction but actually lived that rockstar sex life. He was traveling with two sisters he was banging as well as some models and even got one of his manager's wife pregnant because he could not stop fucking anything that moved.

Guys like Dice, Patrice, Hicks, Carlin, pretty much all took parts of their persona from Kinison. But Kinison actually lived it. Fags like Carlin made fun of 'white bankers'. But Kinison made fun of starving nigger children posing for National Geographic photos decades before Starvin Marvin on South Park.
