Everyone says the Scarface one is so good but rap fuckin' sucks when you substitute the beat for a live band. It loses all its edge and stops being compelling. I saw GZA do Liquid Swords with the live band gimmick and it just neutered the entire album. He was opening for Datsik which I think was a strategic move to ensure he was opening up for a bunch of molly'd out white kids, AKA the easiest possible crowd to please. They would cheer for him off his name and legacy alone. If he tried that shit at the Apollo they would've killed him.

Saw him do the album live with just the regular backing tracks and it wasn't very good either. Didn't help that he was phoning it in and doing the lazy "turn the microphone towards the crowd" shit, but rap in general seems like a genre that isn't great live no matter what.

The fact that it's considered OK to just rap along to a backing track is kinda crazy to me. There's plenty of elderly rock bands that do it and it's bullshit in those cases too but at least you can kinda understand it because they're old af. Motley Crue don't even play their instruments anymore and Vince cannot sing without getting winded. But to be in your 20s slurring along to a blatant backing track feels shitty, like you're shorting your fans who undoubtedly paid a lot to see you.

I'm not as into him as I once was but RA The Rugged man raps all his stuff live and maintains the speed and timing of all his flows without a backing track. Tech N9ne is very impressive live as well as a lot of his stuff is very fast and his sets tend to be a couple of hours. You get your money's worth with them. The lyrical miracle guys can be gay sometimes but they at least genuinely appreciate the craft :serch_sm: :serch_sm: :serch_sm: :serch_sm:.
