This scene is so sad. He obviously cares for Lisa so much. He's broken over it and lashing out at the one man who would be on his side in the room in a desperate attempt to not seem weak. It's a poignant and touching scene, really, so much subtlety. The actor blew it out of the water.

He’s making it gay by being so defensive. If he didn't make a big deal, showed some confidence, it would be easier to look the other way. But you don't come out to your friends and family and test the waters in a heterosexual relationship.
