If that was the case wouldn't it make more sense for them to pin it on a guy who confessed to the murder even if it was obviously just for clout? Just asking questions here.
It's a fair question, but in the cases I'm aware of they leave them open, so that you know that they know.

Also, there's the risk some lawyer would step in, find evidence that Kuklinski couldn't have done it, and accuse them of pressuring him into confessing to the crime. Once that happens, all of the charges and confessions get looked again and there's a risk that all their hard work gets quashed. Potentially, that could affect all the cops involved in the case - if they've knowingly charged an innocent man once, who's to say they haven't done it before? Better re-open every case they've worked on.

It's much better to not charge an innocent man; and let whoever killed that paedo walk free.
