That muggy rhyming slang was never really a thing either, at least not in my lifetime. Guy Ritchie (a rich kid who grew up in the Home Counties, not London) bears a lot of responsibility for popularising the idea that White English criminals walk around talking like that and acting like harmless buffoons. His movies are the equivalent of West Side Story. The characters in them are as realistic as the idea that 50s hoodlums in NYC would suddenly break into song and dance around like fags.

One of my godmothers was born and raised in Bethnal Green but moved to Archway as a young woman. I spent a lot of time with her as a kid, as both my parents worked and travelled for their jobs, so grew up around her brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces as well. If I ever heard it, it was shorthand, never the blatant, over the top way the Ritchies of the world spell it out - "how's the trouble and strife, mate?" - no one talks like that. It's never the whole phrase. So you might hear "Kev's doing bird again" "Oh yeah? Scrubs?" "Nah, Pentonville." Not "Kev got nicked by old bill, he's doing bird lime in the Ville." Only a complete interloper like Ritchie would think a slang that originated to exclude and confuse outsiders would be spelled out in every exchange.
