This book was mega based.
It’s essentially a pod-person / alien invasion story. A lot of that aspect of the story could perhaps feel passé to the modern reader, but it wastes little time on the classic “who’s infected and who’s not” tropes and just fucking moves into the action.
The main character’s girl falls in love with him and becomes totally submissive to him after he makes a big sacrifice for her but then slaps her in the face. She later says she has “been his since the slap”, not the sacrifice.
His relationship with his father is only fully developed after he stands up to him and out alphas him, at which point his dad immediately gives him full control of their operation.
There’s tons of charming 1950s objectification of sexy adult women, none of the Patpack’s degenerate perversions.
It also avoids going for the easy nihilistic and dour ending this type of book would have if written today. Strong masculine energy throughout.
This was a nice breezy listen and palette cleanser after last weeks Canticle for Leibowitz.
4/5 stars, would recommend.
