In my opinion it's an invalid framing of the conversation to cherry pick somebody from the past in an attempt to figure out if they are "worse" or "better" to us or to eachother according to modern values. There's no way at all to fully appreciate the level of understanding people had at the time, or the rationale behind their worldview and behavior. It's oversimplification to the point of irrelevance. But to each their own.
