Currently, this is the most annoying and valour-stealing thing about him and the way he identifies. He clearly doesn't know what an MD is or does.
Someone working in an MD role arranges and studies scores, auditions and recruits musicians or singers, liaises with a drama director & crew or dramaturg, and either leads rehearsals & sound tech or sets up or orchestrates the pit for a stage show, so it is ready for the conductor and performers to walk in and do what they do best.
Joe would not be qualified to click buttons in the control booth for such a production, let alone get his hooves on the actual music, sound tech, blocking etc.. Perhaps he could come in and mop the floors or turn the house lights off, afterwards.

No one lies like an amateur guitar hobbyist lies. Joe plugs in an amp at the Moose Lodge and suddenly he's a "music director". He slaps on a new string, and suddenly he's a "luthier". I know one guitar fag who gives a few elementary lessons a month to children, and he claims he "owns and operates a music school" and calls himself an "educator". It must be the inner humiliation they feel over having devoted their entire lives to something they're still not really very good at.
