My best guess is that she was taken out on a patrol once it was established that its a low threat area.
Being a base monkey and not officially supposed to be out on patrol she was given a confiscated weapon they probably keep in the vehicle and a spare jacket. It's not an uncommon thing to take out non infantry on ride alongs in quiet areas.
She may or may not have even had a loaded clip in there, it was very much frowned on using AK47's as the sound is very distinct and without direct eyes on you, you can be mistaken for a towelhead.
She would not be taken out anywhere that there was any sort of 'action'. Its all purely a sightseeing and photo op.

She might have been a prior 'heat casualty' ie weak fatty/liability and was allowed to wear less when her whining finally paid off and she was allowed outside the guarded base perimeter. She's completely full of shit re. every aspect of her service. Fat cunt too.

When bases had low rifle stock they would give AKs out or have them in stock at the base b/c they didn't have dick for supply. This is 05 so there were probably a lot of aks floating around, they didn't send enough m4s anywhere they were floating people with only m9s
