What is a pretext (in legal terms)? Does it carry special legal weight?

Not a lawyer but this is essentially what is going on

In US law, a pretext usually describes false reasons that hide the true intentions or motivations for a legal action. If a party can establish a prima facie case for the proffered evidence, the opposing party must prove that these reasons were "pretextual" or false. This can be accomplished by directly demonstrating that the motivations behind the presentation of evidence is false, or indirectly by evidence that the motivations are not "credible".[1]

Plaintiff is saying that prima facie is established based on the pedo comment. Defendant says this is a pretext to obtain the petitioners identity, not that they didn't establish the prima facie basis. It is pretty obviously a pretext as the plaintiff literally says this is what they are doing lol.
