I challenge you to think of any radio bit funnier than the 'Cake Stomp' ...and it was impromptu

I’m not going to agree that it’s Opie’s funniest bit, but the funny things Opie did are funnier than anybody else’s funniest bits. I think this is because he does them with actual cruelty.

  • Cake stomp was genuinely mean.
  • Master Po neutralizing that deranged Stern fan and Opie gloating over his bitch ass was demoralizing and humiliating.
  • Opie letting Ozzy walk genuinely hurt beta male Jim Norton.
  • Opie had the idea of firing Leonard
  • Taking pics of a fat producer shitting was Opie’s idea that was so mean, it got him fired
Jimmys “funniest” bits are cheap edgelord lines, stupid characters, and baby noises.

Anthony’s “funniest” bits are dated movie impressions, one liners, and surface level racism / pedophilic shock comments.

Opie created a workplace culture and show brand of real, authentic cruelty, which was the guiding light of the show. Sometimes it was hilarious, other times it fell flat.

Anthony and Jimmy contributed but only after they were shown the way to the promised land by Opie.

Felony parallel thinking. Its great that there are multiple Opie love threads

Jocktober was his idea, right? If so that’s my answer because it’s at worst the second greatest radio bit in history.

Stern callers pranking C-SPAN might be number one.

Both bits are easy to understand, transferable, any show could do them if they wanted to, you don’t have to be a regular listener to get it, they are timeless, funny and cruel.

Both are really good.

My vote is Jocktober.

One of Opester's funniest bits is ignoring Jimmy's pleas and having DL Hughly on.

It's hilarious because it was so unnecessary. DL isn't some guest like Patrice or Colin that the audience actually cares about.

The fawkin' destroyer just destroyin' because he can't help himself.
Maybe part of it was revenge for an endless parade of dull porn whores.

Plus, who the hell does Jimmy think he is?

He was the sidekick, even with Anthony gone. He should sit down and shut the fuck up. Do your job midget.

Something else I noticed about Opie, and what he brought to the table, since we are talking about it. Everybody hated the reliance on going to the phones, and a lot of the hack bits like putting girls into giant barrels.

But that crap really appealed to new listeners. Why? It isn’t just because they were rubes or that Opie didn’t know what he was doing. Someone new to the show might not be ready to jump right into abortion jokes and period blood and shitting on chests and diarrhea cunts.

There was a period of time when that show was growing. When they were still adding new listeners at a pretty quick rate. They ended up getting a shot on terrestrial again, and had a number of stations.

They got away from what caused the growth in the first place. Easing new listeners in to the depravity of the program was always the right call.

But as Opie lost more control over the show, they lost that ability to, for lack of a better term, indoctrinate new listeners. Remember, while they were growing they were in constant battle with other radio shows, even when they had to stretch to find a way to fight with them.

But it worked to build brand loyalty. It built in “us versus them” mentality that they got away from.

Even as somewhat of a historian of the show, I can’t even put my finger on why they got away from all that. It was working.

Idiots.

Only Jimmy and Anthony hated callers. Callers made some of best bits on the show. Fans doing stuff like harassing other shows and assaults on the media regularly made it on air. Fans carried stuff like Homeless Shopping Spree. Callers made segments like Vos Shining, Misheard song lyrics, dream interpretations, and even Jocktober. Callers would also mix it up with guest and comedians as well. It was a caller who was a former SEAL who asked Chris Kyle on the air if the person he punched was Ventura which became a huge story. "Shut up Bobby you big fat pig".

Sure callers would bomb but they would kill or ask interesting questions just as often. My guess is that Opie loved callers and found it fun to interact with the fans. Like when the fans would call up and talk about something only to plug one of Jimmy's gigs. Everyone in studio would laugh at that. It is revisionist history to say that "everyone" hated callers. But Jimmy and Anthony were closet fag lovers and wanted to make the show worse on purpose. "The cunt won't even look at me". So they said "no more callers" yet Jimmy's endless porn whores and WWE and UFC athletes were fine. And Anthony's race rants and gun rants were fine.

The reason Anthony and Jim cannot take callers anymore is that pests get through. And say things like "Sue Lightning you fucked a boy" or "Where's the Chip cartoon money you stole?". Same reason Stern only takes fake calls from interns and show regulars and not random callers. Because then Wigward from the Hamptons might get on air again.
