Patrice sort of had a thing about not "punching down". One of his main issues with Danny was that Danny was always ragging on E-Rock (who Patrice said looked like he was always thinking "Huh?"). Patrice said that Danny was clearly more intelligent than E-Rock, therefore, his pathological need to always dunk on E-Rock showed that there was something wrong with Danny (paraphrasing). You can apply the same with Opie, Patrice clearly knew that Opie was a dim bulb, so he had no need to shit on him like he would with Anthony or Jim.

I also don't buy that they had "long phone conversations", that only came up after Patrice died.
