Firearm training will help with any nervousness at the thought of handling firearms and will increase your confidence in your abilities. You get used to them very quickly. Have a friend show you the ropes if you have one who carries. Follow gun safety rules and you'll be fine.

Training with good instructors is amazing. But bad instructors can get you in huge trouble. We had a guy near us that was Alec Baldwin levels of safety. Turned out he was fired from being a cop and shouldn't have been a firearms instructor.

Learn your local laws, which i'm guessing are complicated and shitty. Go to a shooting range that rents them and try a few different handguns. 9mm is standard. Don't buy Taurus. Do your research because gunshop employees can be aloof and jaded by niggertry and 0 IQ customers who don't know anything about guns.

I'm kinda the pussy of my family. I only have 3 handguns, a shotgun and an AR. My gun nut uncle probably has 25 various AR platforms, same amount of bolt action rifles and a lot of handguns. When he conceal carries (everyday) he has a .40 Glock in a shoulder holster on his left and a .380 in his right boot

it sounds like as a DC resident you might have to jump through some hoops to get a handgun

I’m not sure what I was thinking, I have neuropathy in all my fingers as a side effect from a drug I’m on so I can’t imagine I could effectively fire a gun with that right now. I think I’ll do it though once that goes away eventually, if I’m not dead.

I’ll get specific gun recommendations later but I’d like it to be small and light for carrying.
