Not paying migrant workers their wages is a really common bit in China. You can get away with it for a while. But if you push it too far, and on too many people, yeah, one of them will kill you. The law is very vague in China so some people are like "fuck it. I've got a blade in my hand, why not?"
There's actually this tradition in China that goes back at least a thousand years. If a common person stands up against a tyrant, kills him and the majority of the population supports him then he'll get off. I can't be bothered to look it up, but apparently that does still apply in some of the less developed provinces.

I remember there was a thread on litcrit not long ago laughing at Rick's "knife fighting" claims and someone posted a video of a guy getting knifed in the neck in what looked like a shopping mall. It just looked like a quick jab to the throat and then suddenly there's fountains of blood pumping out of the guy's neck and onto the floor. Such a retarded way to die.
