Did you ever listen to WBAI back in the day? Holy shit what a collection of absolute cranks they used to have on that station. I used to listen to Hugh Hamilton sometimes because he was batshit insane, his guests were insane, and the callers were even crazier. Listening to shut-in lunatics from around the city call in to argue with Daniel Estulin about the Bilderberg Group was peak comedy.
Oh yea for laughs they always covered all the protests and shit. Every time a cop killed somebody or something you'd get all the white kikes calling in crying and shit. Good times. It could also be droning boredom though too. Like being on downers with cotton mouth. I'd go to AM after hearing Whole lotta love for the 3rd time in a day or Even Flow for the 7th, hearing Bob Grant yell about niggers was more refreshing at 3PM.

The last time I listened to AM radio was last summer, when I wanted to follow the end of a daytime ballgame. While the game broadcast itself was up to snuff, I was amazed by how shitty all the sponsors were. Dr. Shoals, Kars 4 Kids (yeah I know what that's all about), weird vitamin supplements and etc. And I thought man, there must be absolutely piddling money in radio nowadays. MLB broadcasts used to draw beer companies, and Snapple, and now they're hawking foot pads and herbal tea. The fact that a once-mighty NYC radio station is resorting to hiring a deeply washed-up and forgotten Nana says a lot about the sagging state of radio these days.

It took me a few to remember who Sid Rosenberg even was. Then I remembered, he was that retard on that horrible Imus show on WFAN, the one who did the obnoxious asshole shtick. Jesus that show was fucking terrible. The funniest thing about it was when the governor of NJ was nearly killed in a crash while racing to mediate a meeting between Imus and a girls' basketball team.
How Dare you Sir are you saying the great Joe Piscopo is washed up?
he represents New Jersey

This just occurred to me after scanning the thread again.

Bear with the set up: I have this Japanese friend of a friend in the theatre business (I used to work in it quelle surprise), who now works as a lumberjack in Nagano. Nature-loving, hippie-beatnik, outdoorsy kind of guy, no wife or kids, likes his own company and freedom above all. Not massively ambitious nor materialistic but a free spirit.

However, in his teens he briefly used to be a theatre actor-idol in Tokyo, one of those lads in anime musicals. I think it’s because he wanted to sidestep into a music career, get away from his hometown, and piss off his wealthy tiger parents who were set on him being a pro sports player or a lawyer. He quit acting after just five years, though, saying it’s a bullshit industry. This was in the early aughts. He still has official albeit outdated stubs on Japanese wikipedia, probably because of the couple of movies and handful of plays he was in, more than the records he makes with his own money that no-one buys or streams.

Fast forward years, to say about 2017: the only entertainment work he still does is session playing for half-forgotten 70 year old folk & punk legends, and free local open mic nights in his rustic town for talented youth.

Other than that he’s content and settled doing a low-key working man’s job in obscurity, not famous—even weebs & Millennial fujoshi would struggle to identify or recognise him anymore. A few clicks off civilian level, definitely less famous than @UnPRePared

Even still, one day he gets a phone-call out of the blue from a Tokyo FM radio station, who are headhunting and want him for a graveyard slot to talk about 1960s Japanese folk & rock tunes. Sort of an Alison Nightbird Steele deal. He’s stunned, as he has zero broadcasting experience, he hasn’t released a record or done a live in years, and he’s not been on anyone’s radar nor looking for work or a platform. He’d also ticked off the only people in the Toyko A&Ents scene whom he worked for/with due to insensitive comments he once gave to press.

He’s reluctant to accept, as he’s protective of his personal time, and has rich family to supplement his lumberjacking income, but he takes the gig anyway, as a way to promote his open mics, and as a CV failsafe in case he permanently suspends himself climbing and cutting trees or gets too old to do it.

The money for this rajioooo job is shockingly low, and he has to commute in or WFH to do it, yet he still punched in years of weekly shows (he eventually did quit after C0VID, though, got bored of it and isn't into OE)

He got the gig. On big city FM. That can be streamed online to millions worldwide. When he’s virtually nobody.

This shit ain’t hard.

Coast to Coast AM brotherman! Used to be able to get the station deep into the mountains when I went camping with my Uncle Randy!
My then girlfriend moved about 30 minutes away from me. I fondly remember late night drives home listening to Coast to Coast
