Ethernet and Wifi

How have you tested/verified what your network speeds are? Have you checked what the intra-LAN speeds are or what you're getting when plugged directly into the router (Is it just the 2.4Ghz WiFi that's slow)? Is any of the networking equipment hot and throttling back? It's probably just Verizon being cheapskates.

Your Ethernet may only be wired for 100Mbps and not anything higher, especially if it was done 15 years ago.
No, I’m getting 200+ right now

Take one of the wall plates off the wall and see how many wires are hooked up to each Ethernet jack. If not all 8, then you’re not going to get full gigabit. Also read the markings along the cables to see if they’re Cat 5e or higher.
They’re all 5E

If that’s the case and not all of the wires are hooked to the jacks, all you need to do is make the additional connections at each end of every cable and that should solve your issue.

You could also buy an additional access point, set the WiFi name for the 2.4 and 5GHz to the same as the existing network, and put it in the closest room to where you have the issue. If you only have one wireless AP (your router) then you won’t get good coverage in rooms far away.

WiFi coverage is not a problem

For the bedroom just use powerline adapters, they are decent enough that you shouldn't have any issues unless you are doing a lot of copying of files across the network.
I’m getting about 220 Mbps on WiFi in the office so I’m not doing powerline

test speed directly plugged into the router ethernet with a laptop and patch lead. is it still 200-250mb/s?
if its the same its your ISP or router.

Ok so we did a test with laptop plugged directly into access point upstairs - 280 Mbps

WiFi in office 220 Mbps

Laptop plugged directly into router - 230 Mbps oddly..

If you get faster then test the cabling however its unlikely to be that if ALL ethernet ports are reporting same speed.
are the wall ports that are directly patched into the router the same speed as the others going through the switch?

99.9% of the time its one of these things:
router/switch has 100mb/s ports or is fucked.
ISP are fucking jews.

Buy/borrow a used router and swap it in to confirm the asus is ok or not.

to test wall ports, copy files over ethernet from router end to another computer at the other end. large 10gb file or so so you can see the sustained network speeds.
Seems like it may be Verizon Jews. Isn’t typical to get half of the advertised speed?

Honestly, you really should just suck it up and pay for Verizon's equipment if you can't manage this shit yourself.
I can manage it, that’s what I’m doing.

Don't waste your money on a cable tester either, nothing would be working if that was the problem.
I already got it. Was going to test and then send it back but if I’m getting 250 Mbps then it’s probably not cables I would think..

Also, don't bug your IT guy at work with this issue unless you want him to actively avoid you going forward.
I was never going to do that.

When you say you're getting ~200mb using Ethernet, are you plugged directly into your Asus router, or the line directly from your FiOS box outside? You want to bypass as much of your own shit (including wiring in the house) so you can start with square one and just work your way down the line.
That’s from the router. I’m not sure how to test it by plugging directly in.

I've never fucked with FiOS myself, so maybe go into your router settings and find the WAN address before plugging it directly into a computer of some kind. There's more setup required if it's a static address.

It is static so that is the issue with testing the line before the router

Or just look up some computer places to do it. You're more than likely going to have to open your wallet at some point.
Opening the wallet is fine but “computer places” is the rub. As I said in OP, what kind of pro does this work? Who would wire the office if I decided I wanted that?

All their speeds say up to. Try it off peak and see if it bumps up. Could be your modem isn't configured correctly or its old or it could be a config issue at their end.

Also did you clarify, is it mostly wireless devices you care about (but your APs are getting their feed from a line in the wall?)

Not necessarily. I’d like to use Ethernet on my pc but there isn’t one for me to use. WiFi coverage is working fine. Almost same speed at Ethernet now.

There's some APs that are meant to run together, meshing or something, so your device will "seemlessly" switch to a closer one when walking around and the connection becomes below the threshold.
Yours might not be for that. Like your device might be connecting to an AP that isn't the closest or best signal, but just because it was the last one it connected to, and it's not going to swap since for all it knows there's only 1 AP

Yes I have mesh wifi, it’s working fine, no issue there.

Go into your router settings and look at the WAN config. The IP address there is your static IP. If it's a 192.168.xxx.xxx that's DHCP and means you can just plug the Ethernet cable coming from the FiOS box outside directly into a computer and it'll automatically get an address. If not, also make note of the gateway and DNS. Go to step 8 in this guide to set up static on a device that will take an Ethernet cable(I'm assuming you're using Windows). https://www.hellotech.com/guide/for/how-to-set-static-ip-windows-10

Any decent "computer place" should do this, or at least know of someone who does. I used to do this for a small computer shop myself and so did our competition.

If you just need Cat6 patched up to a room, go to an electrician. IT shops will fleece you and do a worse job at it. At least it's like this in europe.

As for your overall throughput... How many devices are connected to the network? Maybe worth to separate some of it to another SSID and find a setting to throttle/limit that on your router. Maybe your Coax is shite or terminates to a relay too far away from your house.

Imagine living without fiber to the home. Horrid.

We do have a shitload of devices on there but most of them aren’t really doing anything most of the time.

Update since I know you all were curious. I got a new wifi 6 router and extender on prime day and just got around to setting it up and now I’m getting 500-600 Mbps so I guess that was the issue. Its pretty sweet, I downloaded CIV 6 in like 3 minutes.
