I wasn't making an argument there so that would fall under plain old insults and rhetoric.
I don't believe in God or the existence of supernatural persons because of the Bible. I believe that the Bible elucidates concepts and answers questions that humanity has wrestled with since the dawn of our history. If I didn’t have philosophical reasons to presuppose that there must be some transcendent being which created and sustains the universe I'd hardly care about a Bible.
"So you only believe that matter is composed atoms and their constituents because you read it in a book?"
"No, I kept seeing matter everywhere, wondered what makes it what it is and went looking for answers. After looking through various explanations I found one which better accounted for the existence of matter than all others."
Like that.
I believe in a higher power, seeing how complicate and intricate the world is. But every organized religion starts with some human being who decides "I know how God thinks", and then having enough charisma to build the movement to where people follow it. If you want to go through all the religions and find the story you like best, go ahead. If you want to believe the prophet Muhammad or Jesus was the one dude that higher power actually communicated with, okay.
But there's no point arguing multiple paragraphs if all you have to say is "I believe in the Jesus story".
