It’s also one of the best selling debut albums of all time - up there with Guns N Roses appetite for destruction. Then like 2 years later everyone hated them and they were a joke. I think when they were huge one of the members said jokingly “we could put out crap and people will buy it” and that second album just didn’t cut it.That shit sold like 20 million albums.
It’s hard to explain to anyone under 30 how big they were then pretty over even before the year 2000. That song “only wanna be with you” was EVERYWHERE. I think of all decades the 90s was the weirdest with what was huge. Started with Guns N Roses / Metallica into grunge with Nirvana / Pearl Jam / Soundgarden into Hootie, Dave Matthews Band types but also “gangster” rap of the early to mid 90s and pop punk groups and near the end you had boy bands / Britney Spears types take off, but also nu metal. Oh, and old geezers like Santana and Cher had the biggest songs of their career. Wild times.
