You’re supposed to show ID so they can verify you are who you claim to be before they let you vote. Pretty much. They do ask for home address and date of birth before handing the ballot over. You know, things that would be on a physical ID card.

Same with mail-in voting during Covid. Most countries I know had fairly strict policies limiting their use to people over a certain age. It's laughable how left wing Americans try to claim the elections are flawless (until a Republican wins) while they defend voting practices that aren't acceptable in literal Third World countries.

I think it is different in every state. Where I am, you give your name, they find you on the voter roll, then they ask you to sign something where you are declaring that you are who you're saying you are. Then they compare your signature to the one they have on file. If the voter check-in person thinks they match, you can vote. Two things about this are funny to me. One, the check-in person is a volunteer with almost no training and they're almost always 65+ year old retirees. Two, they make you sign on a tablet using your finger on the touch screen. I made my on-file signature like 20 years ago on pen and paper and I don't remember what it looks like. My check-in signature never ends up looking anything like what they have on file. They will scrutinize and study and compare my signatures but they always just waive me through anyway like they don't give a shit. Voter ID would be a million times better than this circus.
