Brian is actually being pretty generous here by calling Pat a "midlist science-fiction writer". For starters, he hasn't published a book in almost four years (In The Black) and hasn't secured a book deal in almost eight. He's been writing on spec since In The Black came out. He's lower tier at best at this point.
But also, his current "project" (Tiny Tim in Space) isn't even science fiction, so the absolute earliest we'd see a new Pat-authored science fiction book (he'd have to write one, find a publisher, then get it published) is 2026, a full six years after In The Black. Realistically, though, we may never see one.
