By that point we had guns, a federal government, a civilized society, and a need for expansion. We were also smarter. If we couldn’t wipe out your people we’d just kill all your animals.

Take Florida for example. Owned by the Spanish but could barely keep control of it because of the wild Indians, disconnection from the territory, etc. We basically just barged in there and started fighting off the Indians and used the fact that WE could control the territory as a reason why Spain should sell us the land. And it worked. And then we started making all the Indians not killed march westward.

It’s failing in real time because the Injuns were stupid and naive. “BUT YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH US!” is literally their defense.
