Beach Boys VS. Beatles VS. Stones thread

My first serious girlfriend was massively into the beach boys and I so strongly identify them with her it's completely ruined some great pop songs. she's dead now after giving me absolute hell for a while.

I just tried listening again and it brought back some mid 00s rage I had buried
I associate their music with the best parts of my life. First song I ever heard was God Only Knows. It's funny how it can work out like that where people get different psychological responses from music considered to be objectively good.

A dope Stones moment and their second to last truly great song:

Something about the Stones (And Jimmy Page) that I find amusing is how badly they wanted to be seen as weird and shocking. Both affiliated with Kenneth Anger and the occult (Jimmy being a Thelemite), and meanwhile, McCartney's probably the most legitimate one in terms of being into that sort of thing, and he never overtly promoted it or even mentions it unless he's specifically asked.

Don't think I've ever heard Paul talk about occult shit...what sort of context have you heard?

Mostly that he's into Aleister Crowley. He's on record I think at least two times saying he believes in magick.

Thanks to Richard Kaczynski for pointing out that McCartney has repeated his reference to Magick in his latest interview in Rolling Stone magazine.
Discussing where inspiration for Yesterday came from: "I don't like to use the word 'magic,' unless you spell it with a 'k' on the end, because it sounds a bit corny. But when your biggest song -- which 3,000 people and counting have recorded -- was something that you dreamt, it's very hard to resist the thought that there's something otherworldly there."

And if you think this is too circumstantial, (George Costanza voice) HE IS AWARE enough of the guy to plaster his face on screen while singing the Manson theme song.

They say eccentricity is the key to creative genius. What they don't say is it often goes hand in hand with varying degrees of mental illness.
It reminds me of many great fighters and how their careers get at least briefly derailed because being a world class fighter almost requires you to be someone thats not very well adjusted.

I think there's a such thing such thing as a "healthy" genius. I've certainly seen enough lamentations asking why we bother with the nutter artists who don't have any real worth to society. I'm definitively not mentally ill and don't see this as a personal attack waiting for me the day I decide to become an artist.

According to the band's press officer, Derek Taylor, all four Beatles had abandoned their religious upbringings by 1964. In an interview for The Saturday Evening Post, in August of that year, he stated that the Beatles were "completely anti-Christ. I mean, I am anti-Christ as well, but they're so anti-Christ they shock me which isn't an easy thing."

"A child born somewhere in the Middle East shortly before 7:00 A.M. (EST) on February 5, 1962 will revolutionize the world. Before the close of this century, he will bring together all mankind in one all embracing faith. This will be the foundation of a new Christianity, with every sect and creed united through this man who will walk among the people to spread the wisdom of the almighty powers."
"Dixon later changed her mind, saying her vision probably referred to the birth of antichrist"

February 4, 1962 (Sunday)

Gnostic Philosopher Samael Aun Weor declared February 4, 1962, to be the beginning of the "Age of Aquarius", heralded by the alignment of the first six planets, the Sun, the Moon, and the constellation Aquarius.

February 5, 1962 (Monday)

During a solar eclipse, an extremely rare grand conjunction of the classical planets occurred, for the first time since 1821. It included all 5 of the naked-eye planets plus the Sun and Moon), all of them within 16° of one another on the ecliptic. Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and Venus were on one side of the Sun, while Mercury and Earth were on the opposite side. When the Moon crossed between the Earth and the Sun, the eclipse was visible over India, where predictions of the world's end had been made.

Hours before the Beatles were scheduled to play at the Cavern Club, drummer Pete Best told his fellow musicians that he was ill and would be unable to appear. Determined not to cancel the show, the group called around for a replacement and Ringo Starr, whose group had the day off, appeared in Best's place.

By the way (*Bobo voice* bwy da weigh), that Saturday Evening Post issue where Derek Taylor mentions them being "Anti-christ" was for August 8-11, 1964. What happened 5 years later during that same period of August? I forget.

My grandparents were telling me a Ringo Starr story at Christmas unfortunately I was too drunk to remember it. Basically i am the first of the generation not to have a Beatles story ( yet)
