Good bands with only one album.

That's an obscure one. When I was a goth club kid, the pecking order was a bit like this:

1) Nine Inch Nails fans: hot suburban girls

2) Ministry fans: mostly older goths who were semi-annoyed by how Nine Inch Nails made industrial music "trendy"

3) Einstreuze(sp?) Neubauten, Christian Death, Strawberry Switchblade fans: the goth kids who wanted nothing to do with the other two groups

The Sex Pistols come immediately to mind. IMO the first Cars album was their only good one. Boston, too. Ditto Suicidal Tendencies.

To a great extent, the other albums were basically a cash grab because punk blew up so fast. IIRC, most of the tracks on "Rock and Roll" swindle aren't even the entire band, and it's one big "hit" was written by Sinatra.

The greatest thing about "Rock and Roll Swindle" is that it illustrates how similar that 50s music was to punk music. To a great extent, 70s "punk" bands like the Ramones, Bay City Rollers and half of the Sex Pistols songs, they basically sound like 50s rockabilly that's been sped up.

I don't think there are many bands who broke up right as they were on top, this was definitely one of them. The band is only known for their one hit, but there are half a dozen killer tracks on the album. The songwriter clearly had a chance at being something akin to a younger version of Prince, but he basically stopped performing and focused on writing instead. He wrote that "Murder on the Dancefloor" track that was so popular a year or two ago (due to being featured in a Netflix movie.) IIRC, he also wrote "Torn" for Natalie Imbruglia.

The Best of the Stone Roses is literally just the first album with Love Spreads included.

They had some good singles/b sides that they decided not to put on their debut either.

Then they fucked around for years in legal mess fell apart and Oasis took their spot. At least they had a 2012 reunion which hopefully sorted them for life.

I figured that take might be disputed. Maybe I'll revisit Candy-O again and re-assess it with fresh ears.
I'm a Heartbeat City guy, but I can't really blame anyone for liking one over the other, they're all excellent.

Tough topic overall. Green Day might be a contender, they've ridden the Dookie explosion for decades. American Idiot may be the only other one even close to good but I'm not an expert, someone can set me straight perhaps.

Insomniac was arguably far better, though much less successful. Otherwise you're pretty much accurate, they've had an entire career of of barely 20 songs over the course of 30 years.
