Way embellished. I remember the news reports and Stern talking about it. Dude was seriously injured from the accident and had to be helped from the car and just laid their in the road moaning to himself and to his friends. His brother was a performer and former preacher as well so he made the story more grandiose over the years.

His brother brought in the funniest Kinison tape of all time on Stern once years after Sam had died. He found a tape of Sam from his preaching years. Where Sam was screaming like a maniac, fake crying, and acting like a lunatic during a sermon to try to get people to put money into the collection plate. He went from screaming to fake crying then screaming again at lightspeed it was hysterical.
