" ah yes, this reminds me of when Tchaikovsky composed the 7th symphony for the Zaporizhian cossacks before the battle of Sevastopol. Now listen to me narrate about death, religion and existentialism "

Everyone makes fun of Dennis Miller for this shit, but MacDonald seems to get a pass. Colin Quinn also falls into the category of Comedians who namedrop historical or literary references for the sake of letting everyone know how well read they are.

I don't mind Norm so much talking about life/death so much considering the guy was literally dying while he discussed it, but I can do without the Prussian aristocracy jokes.

Not really. It's just something that happens by accident because they know things and are making jokes expecting other people to know those things...

This is so far off base this could be a Norm bit in and of itself.

Colin does seem to like to bring that stuff up, but it's clear he has an actual passion for it. He wouldn't have based a bunch of specials and books on history and politics otherwise.

Fact-dropping isn't an issue in itself, it's the conceitedness behind it. Compare Norm and Colin to the way Jim and Nana try to talk about 'intellectual' subjects and the difference becomes abundantly clear. Whenever those fags do it, it's obvious that it's not sincere and that they just enjoy playacting at being an authority on something.
