Oh yeah, I did my elementary school state report on Alaska (A+, bucko). I've been there a few times too, it's beautiful – bald eagles flying freely, rivers that look like glass, etc.

Bonus story: My friend went to grad school for hospital administration and got an opportunity to manage a clinic in Anchorage. He was married with young children, but needed that first big break. Anyway, it lasted like 20 months before the head physician spazzed out or something and the clinic had to shut down. My friend had to move back in with the folks on the mainland afterwards, but it all worked out.

I have a friend who's from Fairbanks, he's the one who told me that Eskimos are called Herbie Nyukchucks. Anyhow, he said in Fairbanks itself it is just like any other American city, but you go out of it and it is still basically undiscovered country that's gorgeous and dangerous.
He said everything is expensive as hell but the money you can make is great.
The cold is unlike anything you can imagine though.

Hunt with others. You don't want bears trying to claim your kill for themselves. Not all bear attacks are fatal but being with others gives you better odds of coming out of it alive (they can shoot the bear if you're attacked, etc.). This is all extremely rare but you still need to plan for it.
