Modern Western civilization is based around the thought of infinite growth that marked the glory days of a century ago, and now that that growth's slowed demographically they've been scrambling to find stopgap solutions to continue to have their cake and eat it instead of accepting the inevitable.

we are actually going to find out sooner than later, because to get the younger millenials to retirement age in Canada, we'd basically have to invite every man woman and child in the middle east and north africa to come here and they'd have to accept.

In reality what would happen is you'd have a lot of refusing to retire, a lot of old people dying homeless, a lot of unpaid debt, a lot of socioeconomic collapse, a lot of student protests, probably a socialist welfare state without the resources to provide any services. Many people I know don’t even have an IRA, they only do “what their work offers”, which is usually a small 401k match. None of this will be remotely adequate.

I look at the income of people I know and if they were truly investing for retirement in an adequate way they would have to accept a non-middle-class lifestyle.

UBI could essentially solve this problem forever, provided it is done with meticulous indifference to a persons perceived status, income, or "privilege". I don't find it to be a socialist idea, I find it to be a matter of human dignity, human rights, and a matter of responsibility. I doubt anyone in government has a long-term plan that transcends their own career, so the same thing should apply there.
