Also AJ wanted to sign up for the military on his own but his parents put a stop to it. So you cannot blame AJ entirely for being a queer. Tony fears AJ becoming another Jackie Jr. and Carmela fears him getting his face blown apart by an IED. Yet he probably would have worked as an administrator or media illustrator. They pushed AJ to be a spoiled brat more than he pushed himself.

AJ was playing his parents. He never intended to join the army, but knew mom and dad would give him whatever he wanted to keep him out. It's like in season 2 when Meadow trashed her grandmother's house, then tricked Tony and Carm into giving her next to no punishment.

No he was written to deliberately want to join. This was very common after 9/11 where these young kids were seeing 24/7 recruitment propaganda on television. You have to remember that every single thing on the news during this time was about WMDs or Bin Laden. So AJ being a tv watching drone probably saw thousands of Army and USMC commercials. AJ thinking he would get into helicopter pilot's school instead of being a cook is typical recruiting strategy as well.

This is why Tony and Carmela freak out. They know that AJ would sign papers without consulting them. Meaning he would contracted to the military under penalty or prison if he deserted. AJ was breaking into schools and drinking and driving and using drugs that Tony knew about. And Tony probably guessed that AJ was up to even worse.
