Those three were on my list already. I added the other two. (It's literally a list, in Excel.) Never even heard of Fat City before.

Fat City is a my favorite sports movie if you could even call it that. Great performances by Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges.

If you like Nashville check out Short Cuts (1993)

Two Lane Blacktop
Klute
McCabe and Mrs Miller
The Sting
The Last Detail

And Medium Cool is technically '69 but still worth watching. Also, China 9, Liberty 37 isn't American but it's a decent spaghetti Western that doesn't get mentioned as often as the Dollars Trilogy.
Fawwwwwk how could I forget about Two Lane Blacktop. I'd say watch McCabe and Mrs Miller but go in knowing you will have a hard time hearing all the dialogue but the important stuff you will be able to hear. Kind of Robert Altmans schtick. It's also unlike any western you have seen. Also The Long Goodbye is great too, also by Altman.
