You speak in absolutes. Ian Gillian was an absolute monster in his day and Blackmore was just as important as Tony Iommi in his influence. Dude was doing triplets in the 70's well before thrash metal. One of the best rhythm sections in all of music. The albums with Coverdale and Hughes were pretty sweet too. Rainbow was excellent as well. I haven't listened to Blackmore's Night yet, but I bet it's not bad at all. The Black Sabbath album Born Again is underrated too. Get's shit for being post Dio and Ozzy and the shit album artwork, spinal tap inspiring tour hijinks and below grade production, but the songs were killer. Deep Purple shit all over Led Zeppelin and were better musicians than Sabbath and Zeppelin. Smoke on the Water isn't that great and it's a shame that is the song they are most known for.

I was , still am a Zepplin fan. Deep Purple blows them out of the water, Richie was the first to do the heavy riff based stuff. I was arguing with some dude on Reddit, told him that Ritchie was doing tapping, etc. EVH did expand it, and no short on him, but really? No comparison
Heard one thing from Blackmore's Night, and it is not that bad. He catches alot of shit, but i think he is just a dont give a fuck kind of guy. Im trying to locate more live MK2 concerts though.
Out of all the singers, Ian blows them out of the water. Metal owes him alot
Paice is one of the top drummers. I think it took awhile before Deep Purple was inducted in the RRHOF. Rainbow should be inducted as well

I don't really know much of their stuff but Burn is a great song. Ian Gillan sang as Jesus on the Jesus Christ Superstar album and I think that's one of the greatest albums of all time.

EVH/VH are killer, but I vaguely recall a story about how Billy Sheehan from Mr. Big was doing double tapping before EVH. Blackmore is just so cool to me. Love watching live videos because he has this killer charisma and an energy of menace. Dude looks like he is ready to go witch hunting at a moment's notice. Ian Gillian was, is and forever will be a corny motherfucker in a good way. Dude was the prototype for metal singers and the archetype for how rock stars should look in his prime.
Paice is amazing and him with Roger Glove on bass is just lethal. The two of them together aren't heralded enough. Absolute monster rhythm section.
Rainbow is mostly celebrated for their Dio era, but I am a fan of the Graham Bonnet era too. Blackmore had an endless supply of high caliber singers at his disposal.

Almost forgot to praise Jon Lord. Dude is a legend. Most keyboard/organ players are fairly bland and play traditionally or exist to only add ambiance. Jon Lord was equal to Blackmore in every way. He played the organ like he was Hendrix. It was a lead instrument. Most metal/rock bands go dueling guitar solos but hearing Jon Lord duel with Blackmore back and forth is so goddamn cool. Perfect equals.

And Smoke on the Water is still great — it’s just overshadowed by the entire rest of that album. It was a mind blower when I was younger when I learned that the riff was Jon Lord and not Blackmore (well out of the gates).
Machine Head is kinda perfect. Pictures of Home pretty much laid out the blueprint for post-Dianno Maiden. Space Truckin is equal parts dumb/simple and amazing. Glovers bass leading into the first verse of Higway Star.
Gotta dust that one off this week.

First time I saw them was on the Purple/Scorpions/Dio tour in around 03/04 and I was in the bathroom and all these stupid adults(I was 13/14 were talking about how bullshit it was that The Scorps were on before DP(they were flip flopping night to night). I told them they were idiots DP and while the Scorps are fun/they ain't legends of Purple stature.
I know they didn't write "Hush" but it's my favorite thing they did. I like Rod Evanseses voice and that early shit has a certain sound I just fucking love. At some point when DP had disbanded, a sort of scam promoter convinced Rod that it would be fine to go out as Deep Purple on tour, since DP proper wasn't going. Lotta this type of shit was going on back then, even with people who had nothing to do with the band, going out as The Animals or whatever. There's a funny story about Eric Burdon going to one of the shows and chasing one of the dudes around.
Anyway, funny but also sad, because when you look at how many bands go out with one original guy or not even, for Rod to go out as DP isn't THAT ludicrous...they did shit that will last forever, even though it's not the MKII level of its, but the tour was a disaster. Fans were pissed, they got heckled every night. Eventually Blackmore, Lord, and the others got wind this was going on and didn't approve. Rod Evans DP was supposed to play in LA and had an ad in RS or another music magazine and the Blackmore camp put out an even bigger ad in the paper above theirs stating something to the effect of "Ian Gillian, Blackmore, Coverdale, Paice, etc will not be performing at the show advertised below and object to it even happening." Eventually the tour got shut down and Rod got the brunt of lawyeristic trouble and the shit wasn't even his idea in the first place. Dude went into hiding and never did anything with music again, which I think is a bummer. The dude should be able to show up at a Deep Purple show, wherever he lives, sometimes and sing "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman" and shit.

Crazy how good Perfect Strangers turned out to be. Buddy of mine just did his first show with a DP tribute band
a couple weeks ago as the guitarist, only he didn't do it Cumia style, he nailed the tone and every riff, it was crazy, I hope they keep it up. Took my kids to see DP as their first concert about 8 years ago. Still a fun show.

For anyone in the Tri State area, remember those ads for live music? Specifically back in the 80s/90s. I would always pick up a Village Voice and the ads in the back were live shows, band classifieds....
