The movie covers too much information for how short it is. It needed a Band of Brothers / Generation Kill version for Vietnam that was like 10 hours long. Unless you are familiar with the units and battles of We Were Soldiers you will have no idea what the hell is going on. It would have been a good mini-series but not a great movie. The movie covers like a bunch of medals of honor and other major events without even telling the viewer.

The stuff with the wives is historically famous because they were the ones who created the death unit that notifies families in person of a casualty death. Before you would literally get a telegram or letter in the mail saying "YOUR HUSBAND GOT BLOWN UP YOU NEED TO CLAIM HIS BODY AT LOCAL ARMY BASE". Now they have the unit that comes to your house with a chaplain and counsellor to tell you that your relative is dead.
