Years ago, Kurt Vonnegut was at a literary thing, sharing a stage with the guys who write the Penny Arcade web comic. Kurt felt that this was somehow beneath him, so he started acting shirty; so one of the Penny Arcade guys leaned in and whispered:

"I just want to say that I'm a big fan of your Star Wars novels"

...which doesn't mean much to me; but apparently at the time if you were a shit-tier writer with nothing else going for you, you could hit up Lucasfilm, be assigned a plot outline for a novel, hammer it out and get a couple of months rent.

Vonnegut said something like "Oh, is that how it is?" and got real shitty afterwards, coming off to the audience as a bit of a cunt.

The Penny Arcade guys might be fags (for example, it looks like they've wiped that story from their archives) but I've always admired their ability to get under someone's skin so effectively.

When I was in college I worked the register at a liquor store in a town where Vonnegut was living and working as a professor at the local college. He used to come into my store almost every day to buy a pack of Pall Malls from me. I just treated him like any other customer, and he was always a class act.

One day a classmate of mine, who got an allowance from his parents and didn't need to work, was in the store when Vonnegut strolled in. My classmate started stuttering: "K-K-K-K-K-Kurt-K-K-K-Kurt-K-K-Kurt!" Vonnegut fixed him a look of withering contempt.

Finally my classmate managed to stammer out: "Kurt, I just want to say what a wonderful writer you are!" Kurt stared at him for a moment, put a cigarette in his mouth, and retorted: "I'm also a wonderful smoker," before turning and walking out the door.

He didn't come into my store much after that, but I would see him sitting by himself outside the coffee shop on the main street, and I would always wave and say hello, and he would always return the greeting.

He's a good egg in my book.
