The cops didn't say, "Well since you're telling us you're innocent we'll just let you go then." The cops arrested him after he made that statement which they obviously determined was a lie and they had enough grounds for and arrest and criminal charges.

He also eventually struck a deal and plead the criminal charges down to a misdemeanor No Contest (a k.a. Guilty) plea.
