Ok, so check this. It's clear to me that, in retrospect, Tolkien wouldn't have re-written the first half of Fellowship the way he originally did. The writing in the first half is much more similar to the whimsical fairytale style of The Hobbit than the darker and more mature Romantic mythology stuff that followed. Tom Bombadil and his mysterious cunt wife don't fit into this at all.

If you want another example of how Fellowship was probably initially meant as a follow-up children's story, there's a fox who sees Frodo and Sam leave the Shire and has a monologue about it. The rest of the trilogy is absent of anything like that, as animals are just dumb beasts. The eagles help at the end but aren't given human qualities.

The story also becomes less episodic in nature after the first half. Obviously, the initial structure was meant to allow parents to read the book as a collection of almost self-contained bedtime adventure stories to their kids - one new story every night.

People who complain this piece of shit was left out of the movies clearly have no taste or affinity for good storytelling.

I said that too, I'm glad he was cut out. Oh an omnipotent being that can instantly stop all this suffering and death but is filled with too much whimsy? Fuck this douche

I hate him too and I hate his dumb songs. If he was in the movie it would have ruined the mystique of the ring. People fear it, are easily corrupted by it, but this retard comes in singing and somehow is unaffected by handling it?

They did a nod to him in a deleted scene or in the extended edition where Merry and Pippin get get stuck in a tree only it’s Treebeard who gets them out rather than Tom. That’s more than enough as a reference. Anybody who wanted his full scenes just wants every bit of detail rather than a well-paced film.

I’ve heard people say he represents the enduring nature of goodness or whatever other lame shit. Fine, keep him in the book. Sam and some of the other hobbits represent “enduring goodness” well enough in the films. No need for the singing retard.

You’re getting close to verging on marvel / star wars nerds who treat the lore as being real.

The truth is he’s just an author who wrote a really good book series and some of it is stupid.

Star wars people debate why Luke’s lightsaber is green and what it represents and the answer is they picked green because it was different to blue and looked better against a blue sky background.

I go pretty deep with lore of lotr because it kills time well at work, but it’s just a guy who wrote a book.

In response to a letter, Tolkien described Tom in The Lord of the Rings as "just an invention" and "not an important person – to the narrative", even if "he represents something that I feel important, though I would not be prepared to analyse the feeling precisely. I would not, however, have left him in, if he did not have some kind of function." Specifically, Tolkien connected Tom in the letter to a renunciation of control, "a delight in things for themselves without reference to yourself," "Botany and Zoology (as sciences) and Poetry".

WWAW female hobbits? Would you?

Nothing wrong with being heavily invested in stuff as long as it's good and you can derive some kind of meaning from it. Tolkien is quality books that will stand the test of time while Marvel is cringy power fantasies dreamt up for manchildren by da kikes.

Fully agree, I love the silmarillion and the lore from that specifically.

Afaik Bombadil was just an in joke and private thing between him and his kids.

They picked green because up until then, we had only seen blue and red lightsabres. Blue represented the good, red represented the bad. Green was to show that Luke was conflicted, he had been trained as a Jedi but he still had so much anger and conflict inside of him. This culminates in the scene where the Emperor tries to get Luke to join him and he realizes that he's a Jedi, like his father before him, not Vader but Anakin.

Nice media literacy, stupid.

In the behind the scenes George says they picked green because it shows up better at the start of the movie against the bright blue sky (filmed in Tuscany?)

Like the behind the scenes shows Sam Jackson asking for a purple one because it’s cool and George just saying “ok”

But windu’s is purple because it represents he’s tapping into the dark side (red) mixed with the Jedi blue bla bla bla bla bla. It’s retrofitted lore to simple movie making choices

George also said he had all the movies planned out from the beginning. The truth is probably that the director, producers or whatever decided the colour and then asked George if that was okay.

I’m not saying you’re one of those people because you aren’t, but I love lore and dive deep into it but I know in reality there isn’t a great meaning behind most stuff, it’s just some dude made it up, probably impulsively.

Some people act as if the Jedi or Morgoth are actually literally real and can be studied like archeology you know?

Forgot to mention: after A New Hope, it's my impression that George was just an idea guy and all the minutiae was up to other guys, including the colour of Luke's sabre.

I get what you're saying and I believe that by the time of the prequels George had total control and didn't give a shit about details like this. But for episode 5 and 6, there were so many extremely talented people working on them that they had to give everything extra attention.

There's a story of the crew that was making the videogame Force Unleashed, they had created this great Sith character but George apparently had to be the one to name all Sith characters. So George goes to meet them, doesn't look at anything but a small doll someone had made of the character and decides that his name is Darth Icky.

I prefer Star Wars being George’s baby. It’s pretty gay now.

Tuscany, Tunisia... neighboring tribes, so close enough.
