Tipping

I know 20% is standard but I usually end up tipping ~25% even though most servers are mediocre, although I do prefer servers that don’t small talk. I’m also not impressed when they take the order by memory.

I find myself tipping for take out and I have no idea why. I think I started doing it during Covid and just haven’t stopped. I don’t even know who it goes to. The cashier? The cooks? Just into a pool of tips they divvy out?

Lastly, what is the protocol for tipping hotel housekeeping?

In summary, I think I tip too much at restaurants and probably not enough at hotels but I’m curious to hear what the other brothermen do.

Anecdotally since I was a waiter for two decades I will tell you that nothing made me laugh more than one of the cocksuckers I worked with would “memorize” an order and then start freaking out in front of the POS terminal because they forgot part of the order.

Having an internal battle against their 76 IQ brain about having to go back to the table and ask the customer to repeat their order again because of their fuckup.

I worked at places that served $10 dinners and other places that served $100 steaks. The job gets easier as you ascend to nicer places. People do not want their food fucked up, especially when they’re paying $400 for dinner.

Part of it though that can look tacky in my opinion is when a server is holding the notepad too high and they stop making eye contact with the table. You can maintain eye contact and write orders without looking like Flo the truck stop waitress.

Are you over tipping? Most likely. Most nights I made $40-$50US per hour doing relatively easy work. The biggest over tippers I’ve found are always fellow servers. Especially if they’re eating out after a shift. Those stupid assholes will tip 50% out of some uneccesary solidarity, which is why I always hated serving coworkers when they’d come in on days off.

Listen asshole, we both make relatively the same money, you don’t need to drop $100 on a burger and a drink because you work here.

15% to wait staff. $5 if someone helps me carry a heavy bag. Everyone else can get a better job.

It makes me nervous and I’d much rather they just scribbled it down than fuck it up and waste my time. I couldn’t give a shit if my order is wrong, it’s just the time I can’t get back that drives me nuts.

I will also force myself to tip more to male waiters that aren’t shit since biologically I want to give the females more and that’s not really fair.

It depends on what experience you’re looking for but out of all of the servers I’ve worked with, the guys are always the best at a nice place. If you want some young broad to play slap ass with who may or may not bring your beers on time or even get your order right, most young girls can do it and in many cases make more money than the guys.

If you go into any older, established, high end place it’s almost always gonna be a male waitstaff.

Yep. My rule of thumb is if there's a hot hostess, you can take it to the bank that the food sucks.

I pretty much only overtip for bartenders who are cutting me a deal and pouring nice shit for the price of well drinks, but otherwise maybe 25%. More if I'm drunk and in a "I'm going to empty my change jar then kill myself" kind of mood.
I don’t drink but this isn’t so much tipping as paying for stolen goods, I have no problem with it.

Not to mention even on a $50 bottle of booze they're still making a profit at $3 a shot. Not a lot at that rate, mind you, but just as an example and for 99% of people they're charging that much or more on a $15 bottle. Hard to feel like I'm the one being stolen from if it's maybe a once a month thing, yknow.

If I don't get a thank you from the person, I'll make sure to never tip them or their establishment ever again.

I did a quick take out sub from a nearby pizza restaurant and tipped $5 on the sub and the cashier who only asked for my name couldn't even be bothered to say thanks.

It's been over 7 years and I haven't tipped them again.

If im in my neighborhood, i tip 20% so they can hook me up with all the fixinssssssss whenever i go back

and if they ask "would you like to add on optional tip?" on the stupid screen when you go to pick up food,
I dont acknowledge them and never go back there again

it doesn't make a difference to the point you wanted to make
It does if I was wrong about what was going on and the bartender giving him extra is not stealing. Like maybe the guy owns the bar? Don’t be so sensitive nobody cares if you drink.

maybe he does own the bar, the fact that you drink or dont drink is irrelevant.
unless you're a grown man living under a rock and gasp in fear when a whiskey is passed in front of you, tipping for extra product is the point
