That's actually not how the monkey's paw works, you'd think as a reader he'd know that. It doesn't twist your wish because you don't word it correctly, it gives you what you want just at a horrible expense.

But he stole the joke anyway.

The monkey's paw doesn't give you a wish with side effects, it doesn't give you a wish that breaks reality, it gives you a wish that occurs naturally, but the process that it occurs with is the consequence.
