She was shit at being Tony's shrink but it wasn't because she was a bad shrink, it's because she was so naive about everything to do with the world Tony lived in and Tony's basic nature. Tony was a pathological criminal. He was raised to be a mafioso.



I love that scene because Artie knows Tony like a brother and what he says about Tony is absolutely true. Tony's criminality is instinctual. Artie knows this because they've been friends most of their lives. Melfi can't understand, let alone treat, someone like Tony because she wasn't trained for it and also because she came up in Wonderbread Wop world where they resented people in the mafia for giving Italians a bad name. That thing Melfi's family shrink says about how Tony should see someone who specializes in "Mafia Depression" is actually good advice. Take stock of the other patients Melfi sees throughout the show. None of them are like Tony other than Gloria, who it's no coincidence Melfi ultimately fails with as well. All of her other patients are all upper-class, non-threatening looking types. She had no business trying to treat someone like Tony.

There's another scene after Adrianna is dead when Tony is in the hospital where Christopher talks to Agent Harris and his partner in Satriale's about providing information on terror funding. Christopher says something about how he "wouldn't know one of these suicide assholes" and Agent Harris responds, "Your girlfriend knew Matush Gia."

David Chase showed every shrink on the show to be useless and corrupt. They are all portrayed as being evil basically or incompetent. Melfi has two patients kill themselves. She fails to treat Tony properly and actually strengthens his gangster abilities. Melfi's shrink fails to treat her and instead uses her for mafia insider information about Tony and violates his own ethics by bragging at dinner to their friends about her mafia patient because he is jealous. Melfi's family shrink brags about the jewish mafia to her family instead of treating them. Meadow's shrink instead of treating her offers her drugs and tries to get her to purchase a college semester abroad through her travel agency. She tries to make money off of Meadow after her boyfriend is murdered. AJ's shrink tells him to join the army during the War on Terror and then feigns knowledge to his parents.

Melfi also learns more from Tony than Tony does from her. Melfi throws her napkin at the smoker in the restaurant like Tony intimidated the guy wearing a hat. "They took the bleachers out two years ago". Melfi starts drinking during the day and becomes an alcoholic. Melfi keeps Tony around after Gloria even. She wants the thrill of treating a mafia boss more than she wants to help him.

Tony goes to Melfi for the panic attacks. Because the attacks are a health issue. But really it is because they make him look weak at a time where he is competing to be boss. And also him passing out is humiliating for an alpha male type to nervously feint when cooking sausages on the grill. Melfi tells Tony to let Livia feel in control when she is not to get her to accept moving into Green Grove. This influences Tony to let Junior feel in control and become a fake boss while Tony runs things behind his back. Melfi tells Tony to act "as if" when he returns from being shot. So Tony assaults the muscle guy in front of everyone just to look tough again. Pretty much every therapy session is Tony using Melfi to sharpen his skills as a killer or mob leader. Tony learns in the first season that therapy can help him in the mafia. Melfi learns it in the last season and freaks out by cutting Tony off from therapy.

She had no money of her own, no life skills, nowhere else to go, and the cops wouldn't help her because she couldn't give them anything. Her best shot would have been to steal a bunch of money from Tony and try to disappear. That's a big risk.

The whole bit about how Tony should turn himself in and spend his prison sentence contemplating the book Crime and Punishment is so asinine that it's funny. Krakower, like Melfi, is from a totally different world than Tony and Carmella. He gives Carmella ignorant, terrible advice just like Melfi constantly gives Tony ignorant, terrible advice. The best advice Carmella gets is from the African priest a few episodes later.

True but he is not treating her as a shrink. He is acting more like a lawyer or even a cop at that point. Also he knows that her coming to him for therapy ever again will never happen. She is a not a patient and is not returning. Her coming to him, paying him to hear what she wants to hear, and then leaving is what she is there for. He basically becomes an accomplice for a mafia relationship if he does what she wants. She did not come to him for therapy she came to buy his blessing for her marriage. Which he immediately knows is happening because it is so obvious. Carmela is not interested in therapy at all. She just wants someone to justify her remaining with Tony for her. And she does it in such a direct way that the shrink has no room but to call her out. She thinks that paying a shrink a few hundred to hear him say "stay in the marriage" will give her peace of mind.

The shrink also kicks her out without any money. Meaning there is no trace of her ever being there. And also does not have her contact a lawyer or police which shrinks can do if they hear someone talking about crime. He basically gets himself out of a bad situation immediately but in a more brutal way. If he really wanted her to leave Tony he would have her contact police or schedule a free followup appointment. But he basically does shock and awe and kicks her out.

Carmela then goes to the Church and literally gives the same exact speech she gave the shrink, and they tell her what she wants to hear. That she can live off of "the good part" of Tony's money. And that as long as Tony does not abuse her or the kids their marriage is fine. And that divorce is more immoral than being married to someone in organized crime.

The Jew therapist scene is great because it's someone who Carmela looks down on - a Jew, a therapist, a non-Italian non-Catholic etc. - actually giving her practical and moral advice, and bringing up Dostoevsky whose philosophy was inspired by Christian ideology.

As soon as the therapist asks, "he's in the Mafia?" she gasps and starts shedding tears. She knows he's right about everything, but doesn't want to hear it. Her not taking his advice comes back to burn her, as Tony torments her by calling out her hypocrisy and love of money.
