Actually can anybody recommend a relatively easy to learn free audio editing app. Last time I did this was with Sony Vegas in 2006? Everything search I get from Google nowadays is spam and shit.

yeah, pretty easy to master also. I rate it for basic stuff, & you can download plugins to do more

Audacity is the simplest audio editor, all you need is to rip a backing track from YouTube and get recording

Reaper is what you want if you want multitracks. Audacity is mostly for editing single tracks. Reaper technically costs, but there's an honor system so you can keep using it without paying. Its pretty great. Way more useful than audacity, which is entry level software for cheap faggots who don't know what they are doing. Audacity is like the ms paint of audio software.

Don't get me wrong: Audacity was the shit in 2003. Its ok for post production tasks and is great for some specific technical audio manipulation but the UI is utter, utter garbage there is not much it can do better than any other software. It's worse than useless for making any form of timecoded music or editing together from multiple sources. The one thing it has going for it is that it's open source, but the trade off is against user friendliness and flexibility.

It's the most simple and flexible free "Keep recording tracks on top of one another" software you can get.
Audacity is underkill, ableton is overkill, Reaper is your goldilocks porridge.
Download your backing track, throw it in Reaper, record your vocal, mix, render and you're done. If you're feeling really fancy you can use something like lalal.ai to split the original song into stems and you can make your own instrumental version to sing over.

Thanks dude. Yeah when I get close to done with a thing, I inevitably want to shit it up with a bunch of stuff and then take it off and back and forth till I'm either happy or fed up. Still eval is cool. I'll try that.
