Beating a dead horse here, but the Bungie action was a civil proceeding. They spent money that they claim that they "needed" to spend in order to "protect" their employee. They sued the troll to "recover" this money. The troll did not respond, so a default judgement was entered. Had the troll hired an attorney and responded, most likely he would have argued that $500,000 is an insane amount of money to spend "protecting" a community manager, especially given the industry they are in (online gaming), where people are shit talking each other constantly. No criminal charges of harassment, stalking, or threats were filed, and it's likely that the $500,000 would have been chopped way down or dismissed entirely.

With regards to Fatrick, if he wanted a similar outcome, he would firstly need to identify someone specific (already tried - #PayQuasi), then he would need to point to specific expenses that he has had to pay in order to deal with supposed harassment. I also imagine said Bungie employee was not regularly calling for the rape, torture, and execution of his political opponents, telling people to beat women, and replying incessantly to every single troll message that was sent to him.

Hmm… this person is trying to help me in my EPIC battle against evil stlakers. Should I say:

“Thanks! I appreciate you looking out for us!”

No no, that won’t do. Way too much vulnerability. Let me try again:

“Yeah, WE ALREADY KNOW, CUNT!”

Much better!

Pat is like MovieBob in that he can never, ever admit that he might not know about something. Robert (he hates being called that) responds “I’m aware” with an unspoken “you idiot.” Those two have so much in common, but Robert is at least intelligent enough to resist acknowledging his trolls 98% of the time.
