This actually reminds me of the entirety of the SFWA / SFWA adjacent low sales, low effort crew, and explains why print - sci-fi in particular - is in the shitter.

Before discovering Pat and the SFWA I thought you had to be really talented to get book deals and if you didn’t make the NYT best seller list you were a joke. Turns out I was very wrong - you’ve got writers that put out books that will never be in hardback because they don’t sell yet still get contracts. “Paperback Trash” really sums up the SFWA.

I assumed it was something like movies where it was hard and expensive to get one made and to keep working you had to get noticed to finance the next. Apparently you can just turn out fan fiction while drinking in a sports bar and if you con the right person you're now a published author.

Writing used to have a barrier for entry, talent. Now any dipshit can publish whatever they want and there are countless publishers that churn out crap. The cost of publishing is at an all time low and most of this nonsense is vanity projects from hobbyist authors like Rick.
