I barely followed that shit. I just remember everyone hating Leno. I tried to look up what happened after reading this thread but it's just as confusing as it was back then.

I refuse to believe every retarded liberal millennial faggot at the time knew what was happening, they just wanted an excuse to point at Leno and call him the bad guy.

So there was a sequel to the book "The Late Shift" about this, and I owned it: "The War For Late Night". It laid things out in a much more coherent way than these cunts online that try to talk about it retroactively.

I lost that book many tours ago, but this is what I remember:

- Conan wanted The Tonight Show. That was always his goal. On his last contract signing for Late Night, he pretty much had it built in that he would get the job - and that news was dropped on Leno's lap. At the time, Fox was very heavily pursuing Conan to be their late night guy, which they never had. NBC caved to prevent this, thus starting this whole nightmare.

- The biggest revelation in the whole book came during Conan's transition in the early days of his new tenure: we all know his ratings were terrible, because he was too quirky for the mainstream, and his attempts at adapting to mainstream were too awkward. And also, Leno's ten o clock show was dying in the ratings too, pissing off the stations that licensed NBC. That's when one of the heads of NBC came up with the idea of moving Leno to 11 and the Tonight Show to 12:00.

That was thrown out to the bigwigs, who were then asked if they could do that. That's when they admitted that they had built in no protections to themselves in Conan's contract - something that I guess Leno's contracts DID actually have so he couldn't fight such a move. That didn't go over well as NBC still made the announcement, only for Conan to publicly refuse.

There was a lot of really eye-opening stuff in that book. And I don't think anyone looked innocent in the end.

People are still such faggots about that whole deal to this day. I liked both a lot back in da day but I came out of that situation really hating Conan and his faggot fans. They wish death on Leno and shit, it's fucking goofy. Even back in college when it happened I thought those people were gay weirdos and here we are like 15 years later and they are still holding that fruity ass grudge.

I noticed a ton of revisionist history about Leno's ratings from that time. When people bring it up now, they always say "Leno stole the show back even though his ratings sucked!" which just isn't true at all. Leno pretty consistently had high ratings and even beat Letterman most of the time.

They're confusing it with his 10:00 PM show, which DID do terribly in the ratings.

No one is clean in that whole thing, but it's mainly NBC's fault: they tried to appease Conan without being up front with Leno, and they didn't build in the necessary protections to make Conan move the timeslot against his will, OR cut him clean if the promotion didn't work out.

They embarrassed the whole network and paid out the ass to remove him, just to bring Jay back. It was bloody stupid, really.

@ElectricLightKazooII, do not get me started on that drunkard Fallon. I'm not even American, but I have a very deep admiration for your country's royalty of Late Night shows - which has been dead for at least a decade. Once Ferguson and Letterman left, and they announced James FUCKING Corden and that twat Colbert as the replacements, I knew you all were proper fucked.

God's showing him now. Fucker can't move without getting his face smashed in or being set on fire.

He gets a pass for the one bit that made me laugh probably harder than I ever did with Ferguson: his parody of the LAPD nailing a celebrity in a car with a female hooker, post-Hugh Grant mind you, and they pulled out Richard Simmons, who proceeded to run around screaming like a flaming queen.

It was the funniest fucking thing I ever saw and I can't find it again! I wish I had downloaded it. Leno gets a pass with me for that.

Team Coco was the one and only time I became a social media faggot and I regret it to this day. Ranting constantly about how unfair Conan was treated without knowing any of the details and knowing that Conan’s Tonight Show sucked ass, and then once the dust settled, I never once watched even a second of the TBS show. Got plenty of likes and retweets though, and that’s what it’s all about, right?

It is a shame any of it happened, Late Night was one of the last funny things on network tv. It was over for Conan the second he decided to sell out.

I don't doubt he'd suck Satans cock so something weird happened.
Wrong. Conan is notorious for being one of the biggest insider cocksuckers and sellouts in show business. He had zero ratings for his entire late night run and somehow still managed to get The Tonight Show for himself. He was so terrible at his job that he was paid $30 million to literally just walk away and let Leno return.

This faggot also became an ordained atheist minister and held a fag marriage on his talk show between two of his writers.

I’ll always defend Conan. I don’t find him funny. He’s as boring as watching paint dry. But I appreciate that he isn’t a Jimmy Fallon / Kimmel carbon copy. And he’s also not trying to do what Leno or Letterman did. He’s doing his own thing. It’s unfunny, but it’s his own things. He’s also much better than some dumb faggot like Seth Meyers.

I’ll also defend Conan after listening to O&A cover the Conan vs Leno shit. Jimmy was pulling the most wormy shit ever, shitting all over Conan and Letterman simply because he thought he had to be “loyal” to Jay. As if Jay Leno gives a FUCK about “Jim Norton”, lol.

The only one I'll ever defend is my fellow Scot, Ferguson. Didn't overstay his welcome and did his own thing. Was beating Conan for some time, too.

And he had the perfect gig: Letterman's Worldwide Pants owned that time slot as part of his contract, and, barring censor issues, the network couldn't tell Craig what to do. Dave had that as part of his deal to come over when he lost The Tonight Show to Leno, which he used to bring over Tom Snyder, then Craig Kilborn, and finally Ferguson.

That's why Ferguson left just before Letterman's final show: He'd have to change without Dave's protections, and we saw what that was like with both Corden and Colbert... Pure bland shit.
