Those things were all over the place and now I haven't seen one in at least a couple of years. Apparently the chinks bought the company and stopped making them. Are campus security guards just walking again now? What a weird little moment in history.

Kikes invented the Segway. So of course it got mass produced and marketed despite being useless.
This makes so much sense...every sitcom was used as a marketing gimmick for them for some time...from Frasier to King of Queens to Malcolm in the Middle...all had zany segway experiences but always with a backdrop of "this is cool, you should do it, buy one".

Makes sense.

Um, pretty sure they revolutionized transportation

That makes sense. Didn't they cost like $5k or more? People would wear a helmet and most of the time were slower than walking because you couldn't navigate steps or even a slight amount of a crowd.

Anytime they were in TV or movies it was always the butt of the joke. Arrested Development and Mall Cop are the only examples I can remember though.

At the risk of "segging" into another topic (:brothaman_sm:), hoverboard-type vehicles are all over China. Maybe there were legal issues in the US, so the company used the technology to release similar products in countries where health and safety, human life etc aren't so important.

I am rejecting the entire premise of this thread

Still think Segways are gay? Didn't think so.

Those stupid fucking things were such a scam. The hype around them was also kind of showing how gullible people were. The handful of people who were supposedly allowed to see prototypes were literally saying we were going to have to re-think cities because these things would be everywhere. But how did it work? Rumors were going around that they could actually go up and down stairs, that they floated, it could literally read your mind, and that they could go very fast. The South Park episode lampooning them isn't far off from the general attitude of them at the time, including people rather getting mechanically fucked up the ass rather than going to the airport. I watched the reveal video for it, and the asshole demonstrating it was still attempting to convince people it "knew" what direction you wanted to go. The video showed the guy saying, "If I want to go forward, I just think about going forward", and then the thing amazingly moved forward, nevermind that he was LEANING in the direction he wanted to go.

Years later, the creator died when the Segway he was using sent him over a cliff, or maybe he was thinking how funny it would be if the Segway didn't stop at the edge, so it tossed him off the cliff like it was supposedly designed.

I was watching the today show when they were going to premier it. And the hosts were actually speculating that it may hover, that's how it will revolutionize how we get around. The hype was ridiculous
